Car that caught fire outside Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre put out by SCDF
A BMW caught fire at an open-air carpark in Geylang Bahru last Saturday (26 Sept) afternoon, causing another car next to it to be damaged as well.
A photo of the incident posted on Facebook showed firefighters spraying water at the black car’s engine to put out the blaze.

Car emits smoke as firefighters attend to fire
In footage of the incident posted on TikTok, a large amount of smoke is seen coming out of the car, which was parked in front of Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre.
A fire engine and several firefighters were at the scene attending to the fire.

According to the caption, this was recorded at 3.50pm on 26 Sept.
Car parked next to burning BMW damaged by fire
The original poster (OP) panned to a red car parked some distance, which could have been moved from its initial spot.
The side of that car was blackened by soot, and its doors appeared to have been warped by the heat.

The OP said that her car had been parked next to the BMW that caught fire and ended up being damaged too.
However, she was glad that nobody got hurt.
When a netizen expressed sympathy for her, she said it was okay as she could make an insurance claim.

BMW’s bonnet charred after Geylang Bahru fire
Her video also showed that the BMW’s bonnet was reduced to a charred shell after the fire.
The vehicle was also completely coated in white powder.

Cleaner & public try to put out fire with extinguishers
A 38-year-old cleaner at the food centre, named only as Ah Ting, told Shin Min Daily News that he noticed the smoke while he was clearing dishes and realised there was a fire.
He and a colleague broke open the fire cabinet and grabbed 11 fire extinguishers to help put it out.
Several members of the public also helped out, he said, adding that it was something that “ought to be done”.
A stallholder whose drinks stall was closest to the burning car said the police cordoned off the area and remained at the scene to investigate for at least four hours.
The vehicle was removed by a tow truck at about 7pm.
Car’s owner had owned it for 5 years
The BMW’s owner, identified only as 34-year-old Mr Chen (transliterated from Mandarin), told the Chinese daily that he saw smoke coming out from his car engine barely a minute after getting out.
He called the authorities after the engine caught fire and he had retreated to a safe distance.
He had owned the car for nearly five years without any issues, he said, and was puzzled as to why it had suddenly caught fire.
Fire involved engine compartment of car: SCDF
In response to queries from MS News, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at about 3.55pm on 26 Sept.
It involved the engine compartment of a vehicle at 69 Geylang Bahru — the address of Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre.
SCDF extinguished it using a water jet and hosereel, with no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
