PMD catches fire near Yishun road junction, extinguished by members of the public

Fire likely originated from battery of PMD at Yishun: SCDF

A personal mobility device (PMD) that caught fire near a road junction in Yishun was put out by members of the public, with no injuries reported.

Footage posted on TikTok showed the device engulfed in flames right before a pedestrian crossing.

Pedestrians & cyclist pass by PMD on fire

According to the captaion, the video was recorded at about 1.30pm near Block 224 Yishun Street 21, which is located at the junction of Yishun Ring Road and Yishun Avenue 2.

As the PMD burned on the pavement, pedestrians walked past at a leisurely pace while others stood watching it from a distance.

A cyclist even stopped next to the PMD while waiting to cross the junction, apparently unfazed by the flames and smoke being emitted.

No injuries reported from PMD fire

In response to queries from MS News, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at about 1pm on Tuesday.

The fire involved a PMD at the junction of Yishun Ring Road and Yishun Avenue 2, and members of the public put it out with a fire extinguisher before SCDF arrived.

No injuries were reported.

Owners advised not to purchase non-original batteries

According to preliminary findings, the fire had likely originated from the battery of the PMD, SCDF noted.

It advised the public not to purchase or use non-original batteries for devices including PMDs, power-assisted bicycles (PABs) and personal mobility aids (PMAs).

They should also refrain from charging the devices for an extended period of time or overnight.
