Pesticide Found In Iceberg Lettuce Can Cause Seizures

AVA Recalls Iceberg Lettuce Containing Pesticide

Bought iceberg lettuce from NTUC FairPrice or Sheng Siong recently?

Then listen up.

On Thursday (4 Oct), the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) of Singapore directed a recall for iceberg lettuce imported from Malaysia.

That’s because the lettuce contains high levels of the pesticide fipronil.

Consumption can lead to multiple health effects

Worried about the health risks you can get from consuming fipronil?

The National Pesticide Information Center of America says that consumption of the pesticide can lead to:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • headaches
  • dizziness
  • stomach pains
  • weakness
  • seizures

Fortunately, symptoms from a brief exposure to fipronil tend to clear up without treatment.

Steer clear of iceberg lettuce for now

A check on FairPrice’s grocery shopping website shows that the Pasar iceberg lettuce is still available for purchase. At $1.60 for a 400g portion, customers can buy the Cameron Highlands import.

Those who shop at Sheng Siong don’t have to worry because the supermarket has recalled the Iceberg brand of lettuce and engaged a different supplier.

Consumers advised to practise food safety

AVA has advised the public to practise good food safety by washing and soaking vegetables before consuming them.

Though it would be safer to dispose of them quickly if it’s Iceberg or Pasar iceberg lettuce.

If you’ve bought the affected product from Sheng Siong, you can return it with proof of purchase to receive a full refund.

Those who purchased it from FairPrice can call the supermarket outlet for enquiries.
