A Grab driver in Pattaya went viral online after sharing that he received a THB1,000 (around S$38) tip from a US Navy sailor for a ride that cost only THB120 (around S$5).
In a local Grab driver group on 4 Sept, Facebook user Nara Mik shared a photo of a THB1,000 banknote alongside a picture showing the back of a man.
“Fare 120฿, given 1,000฿. Thank you, American soldier,” he captioned the post.

The story quickly spread across local social media groups, with many users praising the sailor’s generosity.
Locals share similar tipping experiences
Following the post, other service workers shared their own experiences with visiting US military personnel.
One user said her partner received a THB2,000 (S$76) tip from two American sailors after delivering food to a rented pool villa, with each customer giving THB1,000 baht.

A former hotel employee also recalled that visiting military personnel often left tips between THB1,000 and THB2,000 after receiving services such as haircuts or using hotel facilities.
Some users noted that tipping is common in American culture, especially when customers are satisfied with the service.
US Navy visit boosts Pattaya businesses
These generous tips from US sailors came during the port visit of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln at Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi from 2 to 6 Sept, Pattaya Mail reported.
More than 5,000 US Navy personnel arrived in the area for rest and recreation during the ship’s visit.
Many sailors spent their shore leave in Pattaya, visiting restaurants, shops, attractions, massage parlours and entertainment venues.
The influx of visitors boosted local businesses and service workers, including transport drivers, hospitality workers and small business operators.
