Liang Eng Hwa Diagnosed With Nose Cancer

Bukit Panjang SMC MP Liang Eng Hwa has been diagnosed with early-stage nose cancer, he shared in a Facebook post.

As the 59-year-old requires treatment for the next seven weeks, Mr Liang said he may need to take time off.

In his absence, Holland-Bukit Timah GRC MPs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and Mr Edward Chia will cover most of his duties.

He finally went to an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor, who performed tests on him.

The doctor found that he had early-stage nose cancer.

As a result, Mr Liang has to undergo daily radiotherapy treatments for the next seven weeks.

During this time, he may not be able to perform his MP duties as he might have side effects from the radiotherapy treatments.

Besides Dr Balakrishnan and Mr Chia, Mr Liang also said the grassroots team in Bukit Panjang will step up during his absence to serve residents.

“I will do my best during the treatment in the next 2 months,” Mr Liang said.

Previously had ankle surgery

In April, Mr Liang had to undergo ankle surgery.

Though he was on crutches for a month afterwards, he still managed to attend some events.

One of these events was the exhibition in memory of Late Venerable Master Hsing Yun.

Mr Liang has been Bukit Panjang SMC MP since 2020.

He was moved from the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, where he had been since joining politics in 2006, to contest in Bukit Panjang.

During GE2020, Mr Liang won 53.7% of the votes against Paul Tambyah from the Singapore Democratic Party.

Mr Liang has been managing director for DBS Bank’s Institutional Banking Group since 2013.

MS News wishes him a speedy recovery.
