A 43-year-old witness named only as Ms Huang (transliterated from Mandarin), who runs a noodle shop in the area, told Shin Min Daily News that she and her staff heard a loud noise.
They then saw an uncle lying face down on the road, and they believed a vehicle had hit him.
His head and legs were covered in blood, and he was gasping for air, she said.
The driver immediately got out of his car to check on the uncle, though nobody dared to move him.
Most serious case seen along accident-prone stretch
Ms Huang said she called an ambulance immediately.
The business owner, who has been operating at the location for more than 20 years, said accidents occurred frequently along this stretch of Geylang Road, but usually minor ones involving pedestrians who managed to get back up.
However, this was the most serious accident she had seen yet.
Another witness, a 28-year-old migrant worker, told the Chinese daily that he saw the elderly man crossing the road before the accident.
