Mother & Son Defend Use Of Racial Slur On Videos, Police Investigations Ongoing

Current events centering around protests in the United States are also affecting Singapore — notably, the usage of certain racial slurs.

Channel NewsAsia reports that the Singapore Police Force are investigating a 53-year-old woman and her 19-year-old son for comments they made about a racial slur on Instagram.

They may be fined, jailed, or both if found guilty of wounding racial or religious feelings.

Mother and son defended use of racial slur

Police had received several reports over a video circulating on social media. The video contains several instances of racial slurs used.

Both of them were apparently defending their usage of the slur, claiming that “everyone (says) that” and that it’s a figure of speech.

The 2 of them were then invited to online radio show and podcast OKLETSGO, where they continued to defend their actions.

On the podcast which aired on 7 Jun, the mother explained that she was trying to defend her son, who was garnering hate on social media for a video he made in 2016.

He also used the racial slur in that video.

They explained that they used the word as a term of endearment and mean no harm.

Use of racial slurs can land you in jail

Another recent incident was in the spotlight recently, where a 19-year-old was arrested for making offensive comments on social media. Investigations are also ongoing for that case.

The police takes seriously the usage of racial slurs and will not hesitate to punish anyone who makes remarks that can cause ill-will between different races and religions here.
