‘I kept staring at it and wanted to cry’: Diner spots handicapped myna without feet in Bukit Merah hawker centre
Mynas are a common sight everywhere in Singapore, especially in hawker centres, where they seek the chance to pick at leftovers.
While dining in a Bukit Merah hawker centre, a woman caught sight of an unusual myna.
To her shock, this one had lost both its feet.

Val Young told MS News that she had gone to Bukit Merah View Hawker Centre for lunch last Saturday (19 Sept).
While sitting at a table, she noticed the Javan myna right next to her.

It was standing on a lower section of a noodle stall, where used bowls were stored, she explained.
The myna notably had no feet or talons. Its legs ended in bony stumps, which it stood on.
“I assume it was caught on some wires or fishing rope of sorts,” Ms Young said.
She also brought up the possibility that a human had abused it by tying its feet with strings when it was a juvenile.
The wire or strings would have led to necrosis and thus its handicap.

Diner says myna without feet hopped around without difficulty
Ms Young felt “extremely saddened” at the myna’s plight yet shocked that it survived against all odds.
She pointed out that without feet, it could not perch on tree branches.
It was standing still. And then hopping away. Doesn’t look difficult for him. Guess he’s used to it.
“I kept staring at it and wanted to cry,” she told MS News.
Woman comforted that myna without feet looks ‘fat’
Ms Young posted photos of the feetless myna on the Singapore Wildlife Sightings Facebook group that same day. The post received over 1,400 likes at press time.

One user said its handicap “must be a substantial disadvantage” due to only allowing the myna to stand on flat surfaces.

“Yet, here it is. Surviving,” a more positive netizen wrote.

Another praised it for being “so resilient”.
Despite her shock and sadness at its plight, Ms Val Young also felt the same way.
What’s comforting is that it’s actually quite ‘fat’ looking. It sure is a survivor!
