TikToker suggests for S’pore residents in north to share their clean air with rest of island by MRT

TikTok creator complains that only north side of Singapore enjoys clean air during haze period

“Woodlands, Yishun, you buay paiseh one ah?” asks TikTok livestreamer Fai in a TikTok video posted last Saturday (17 Oct).

Fai notes that during the current haze period, Singapore’s northern side has consistently recorded the lowest PSI readings islandwide.

“I see already I very buay song,” he continues, using the Hokkien term to express his dissatisfaction.

Addressing the northsiders, he said that the rest of Singapore is helping the north to “filter the air with [their] healthy lungs.”

Use the MRT to spread the air

To this, Fai suggests using the MRT to help the West side of Singapore tong fong (Mandarin for ventilate).

His idea involves designating do not board trains at Clementi station. These trains should then be sent without opening their doors until they arrive at Woodlands station, to “spread the air”.

He further suggests that this should be done 10 times a day, so that “everything (the haze) [is not] stuck in the West”.

“Woodlands people you all don’t be so proud ah, your day will come,” he chides.

Netizens banter in response

Several netizens commented on the video and Fai kept the banter going with his replies.

One commenter asked why a particular northern Singapore neighbourhood, Sembawang, didn’t get a scolding.

Another user decided to simply leave a common Singaporean children’s jibe.

Many chose to take the opportunity to gloat and vaunt their neighbourhoods in the north as “the best side”.

Some also played on the stereotype of Yishun being a “dangerous” neighbourhood. They joked that even the haze didn’t dare to cross into Yishun’s notorious borders.

There were also a group of commenters sharing live photos from their neighbourhoods, showing that the air was not actually visibly clear, despite the low recorded PSI.

Just to lighten the mood

MS News was able to reach out to Fai to find out more about his thought process behind creating the video,

The 39-year-old livestreamer said: “Most of my content is verbal vomit on the spot, so it was just what came to my mind at that time.”

As for the idea behind the video itself, Fai told MS News that it started from simply talking about air quality in the north.

He also shared that the main aim in posting the video was to share a piece of comedy content.

“Sharing comedy helps people express their unspoken feelings and talk about it in a more lighthearted manner,” he said.

Despite saying that he is buay song (Hokkien for “unhappy”) in the video, he mentioned that he has no qualms with the north at all:

In fact I’m happy for people in the north to enjoy fresh air.

Fai said the haze situation in Singapore has caused frustration among some, so he’s grateful that others “took a moment to laugh” at his post, steering the conversation towards a more lighthearted direction.
