S’porean father joins migrant workers for lunch at HDB void deck, gets to know them personally

Singaporean joins migrant workers for lunch at Woodlands void deck

A 40-year-old Singaporean man has touched hearts online after sharing a spontaneous lunch with three migrant workers at a Woodlands void deck.

Joshua Woo, a father of six and the founder of recruitment firm Recruit Fast, shared the heartwarming encounter on Facebook on 21 Oct.

Sharing a meal and sharing of hearts

Speaking to MS News, Mr Woo said the workers were carrying out repair and maintenance work on sheltered walkways in his neighbourhood at Woodlands.

“I was rushing home for lunch when I saw them eating together,” he said.

That’s when he opted to drop in and join them for lunch.

Mr Woo added: “No agenda. Just four humans sharing a meal and a chat.”

A father’s love that knows no borders

During their chat, Mr Woo learned more about the workers’ personal lives and the families they left behind back home.

What struck him most was the workers’ love for their families.

One worker, Suresh, has three children aged seven, five, and three. Another worker, Zaw, has a two-year-old daughter.

Some of them have worked in Singapore for nearly a decade, away from their loved ones.

Suresh even made a video call to his children during lunch and introduced Mr Woo to them over the phone.

As a father of six himself, Mr Woo found that moment deeply moving.

He reflected on the moment, saying: “A father’s love knows no borders.”

Urging society to show kindness and appreciation

Mr Woo refrained from generalising, pointing out that many Singaporeans can be “kind” and “appreciative”.

But sometimes, we’re so caught up in our own lives that we forget to notice the people around us. That was why I shared my experience. Not for recognition, but as a simple reminder of humanity.

He encouraged society to extend more respect, dignity, and kindness to those who quietly keep Singapore running.

“A simple thank you, a drink, or a conversation can mean more than we realise,” Mr Woo said. “They work hard to maintain and build our Singapore while sacrificing precious time with their own families.”

He hopes to bump into the workers again for another meal while they continue their estate upgrading works.

“We’re always rushing somewhere, chasing something,” Mr Woo reflected. “That lunch may not have changed their lives. But it certainly reminded me what matters in mine.”
