VSMC’s new Tampines wafer fab to create around 1,600 jobs at full capacity, EDB says
Around 1,600 jobs will be created when a new semiconductor wafer fabrication plant in Tampines reaches full capacity, according to the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB).
The jobs will come from VisionPower Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (VSMC), a joint venture between Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation (VIS) and NXP Semiconductors.

EDB shared the update on Monday (28 Sept), highlighting the new 12-inch (300mm) wafer fab’s role in strengthening Singapore’s semiconductor capabilities.
A press release by VSMC on 28 Sept said the fab will produce 44,000 wafers per month and create 1,600 jobs by 2029.
A wafer fab is short for a wafer fabrication facility, while a wafer refers to a thin, circular slice of semiconductor material that forms the base of a chip.
New fab will support AI, automotive and industrial markets
VSMC’s new facility will support semiconductor technologies used in high-performance computing, automotive, mobile and industrial applications.
The fab will also use artificial intelligence, automation and digital technologies to support smart manufacturing and operational efficiency.
According to EDB, the facility will incorporate Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and Singapore Green Mark standards as part of its design.

VSMC is also working with local polytechnics and universities on workforce development.
This includes internships and professional training programmes aimed at developing Singapore’s semiconductor workforce.

The company broke ground on its first 12-inch or 300mm wafer fab in December 2024, with initial production then slated for 2027, VSMC said.
At the time, EDB expected the project to create about 1,500 jobs.
The new VSMC facility is expected to begin initial production in the first quarter of 2027, with the workforce reaching around 1,600 when the fab reaches full capacity.
