84 CCTV cameras on one pole in China village spark online frenzy
A rural village in Jiangxi, China, attracted attention online after a video of 84 surveillance cameras packed onto a single pole went viral.
The unusual structure was spotted by a tourist visiting Chaoxia Village in Wanlongshan Township, Pingxiang City.
The visitor counted 84 camera units attached to one pole and shared footage showing the devices pointing in different directions.

The sight quickly became a talking point on Chinese social media, with some netizens jokingly calling it the “hardest-working surveillance tree in history” and saying the pole had “more cameras than birds on a branch”.
Others questioned whether such a large installation was necessary and raised concerns about possible misuse of resources.
Most cameras were actually old equipment used as decoration
On Saturday (19 Sept), local authorities clarified that the pole was not part of a large-scale surveillance system.
They further explained that only one of the cameras mounted on the pole is still operational.
The remaining devices are old, damaged cameras that were installed as a decorative feature several years ago by a campsite operator, according to Chinese reports.

The installation eventually became a popular photo spot for visitors and online content creators.
A village official said authorities plan to add an information board at the site to explain the purpose of the display and avoid further misunderstandings.
Campsite owner created installation from discarded cameras
The campsite owner, Zhong (name transliterated from Mandarin), said he created the display after receiving a collection of unused cameras from an acquaintance who worked in the security equipment industry.
He said he noticed the discarded devices were no longer useful and decided to turn them into a creative installation instead.
Mr Zhong added that he had never bothered to count the exact number of camera heads during construction,
He was uncertain whether village authorities had added any working security cameras to the structure over time.
