Woman in Thailand dies after manager allegedly denies her sick leave

Thai factory worker dies after her manager allegedly denies her sick leave

Earlier this week, a woman working at an electronics plant in Thailand died after she was allegedly denied sick leave by her manager.

On Sunday (15 Sept), a Thai Facebook page for factory workers posted a screenshot showing a message in a group chat. “You demand MC, now all she has for you is her death certificate,” the message said.

Worker with no history of leave falls ill

The admin for the Facebook page allegedly got in contact with one of the deceased’s friends. The friend said the deceased factory worker was a woman aged 30.

According to the friend, the 30-year-old woman had no history of taking leave.

However, on 5 Sept, the woman fell ill and visited the hospital. They diagnosed her with an inflamed large intestine and hospitalised her from 5-9 Sept.

When her condition didn’t improve, she asked for sick leave from 10-12 Sept. Unfortunately, even after a week of rest, she still felt too ill to work.

She asked her manager for an extra day off, but they demanded a medical certificate to approve her leave.

Went to work despite illness

Fearing she might lose her job, the lady decided to head to work anyway. But just 20 minutes after she began working, she collapsed and was conveyed to the hospital.

She had to go into immediate surgery as her bowels were undergoing necrosis. She passed away in the late afternoon of 15 Sept.

Based on chat logs shared by the Facebook group, the woman was often reluctant to visit the doctor. Colleagues and friends were concerned and even encouraged her to stay home.

On 16 Sept, the company she allegedly worked for posted a letter offering condolences on Facebook. “We are still in the process of establishing the facts surrounding her passing and have initiated a thorough investigation,” the statement said.
