Singaporean rugby player killed in motorcycle accident in Malaysia

A Singaporean rugby player was killed in a motorcycle accident in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia on the North-South Expressway towards Singapore.

The tragic incident happened on Tuesday (15 Oct) at about 4am, reports the Straits Times (ST).

The victim, 21-year-old Muhammad Razif Harun, was in Kuala Lumpur for a holiday.

He was believed to be returning home to Singapore when he lost control of his motorcycle near the 223.8km mark of the expressway — some 250km away from Johor Bahru.

Razif subsequently crashed into the roadside metal barricades and suffered a fatal head injury as a result.

Rembau acting police department chief, Nur Zuliati Razali, confirmed that the victim died at the scene.

She told ST that despite good weather conditions at that time, the section of the expressway where the accident occurred was unlit and dark.

Razif’s body was taken to the hospital for an autopsy. Police investigations are still ongoing.

Victim was a dedicated rugby player

Razif’s tragic death had expectedly caused waves in the rugby community, with many expressing their condolences online.

The 21-year-old sportsman, who was a member of The Singapore Cricket Club Rugby Section (SCC), was described as a dedicated player.

In a Facebook post, Singapore Rugby shared that Razif’s passion for the game “shone brightly notably through his contributions to SCC“.

SCC also shared the news of Razif’s death on Facebook, dubbing him “a juggernaut on the pitch, and a gentle giant off it“.

Many fellow rugby players took to the page’s comment section to share the mark Razif left on them, most notably during the rugby team’s tour to Spain in May.

“He wanted to be a successful player,” Razif’s cousin told ST. Outside of rugby, he was also a student at Republic Polytechnic.

Razif was the oldest of three siblings who had lost both their parents. His father passed away when Razif was in primary school, while he lost his mother earlier this year.

Razif is survived by his two younger sisters who are presently in his aunt’s care.

SCC Rugby also shared in their Facebook post that the team will be raising funds to help support the two girls who are still in primary and secondary school.
