Man in Singapore cries while hugging Honda Civic he’s letting go as COE expired
A video of a man crying while hugging his Honda Civic, which has been customised to look like a sports car, recently went viral on TikTok.
In the video, his wife, Natasha, revealed that he was letting go of his car that day.
“Breaks my heart to see him cry… but that’s the reality of owning a car in Singapore,” the TikTok user wrote in the accompanying caption.
The video, posted on 11 Oct, has garnered more than 2.7 million views.
COE expired three days before his birthday
Speaking to MS News, Natasha said that her husband, Izzraimy, bought the car in June 2019.
She shared that the car’s Certificate of Entitlement (COE), which allows it to be driven in Singapore, expired on 13 Oct, three days before Izzraimy’s birthday.
When asked whether they had plans on replacing the Honda Civic, Izzraimy said, “I wouldn’t say ‘replace’. Maybe moving on to a new one. The Civic holds a special place in my heart.”
Singapore car owners empathise with man
Many other car owners commented on the post saying they can relate to the man’s pain.
They added that letting go of a car feels more painful, especially if it’s their first vehicle or bought with their hard-earned money.
Another user shared how their car saw them through different stages of life, which made it extra painful when parting ways.
Meanwhile, some users, presumably non-Singaporeans, were confused as to why the man had to say goodbye to his car.
The OP explained in the comments that her husband couldn’t renew the COE anymore as the previous owner only renewed it for five years.
