Thai villagers mistake 3 drunk men for dead bodies

Villagers in Chiang Rai, Thailand were alarmed early Tuesday morning (5 Aug) after spotting what appeared to be three lifeless bodies on the road.

Fearing a serious crime had taken place, they quickly alerted the police.

Photos later shared by Mae Sai Police Station on Facebook show two men lying flat in the bed of a pickup truck parked in the middle of the bypass road, and a third sprawled on the ground just behind it.

To everyone’s relief, the men were not dead, but merely fast asleep.

According to Mae Sai police, the trio had gotten drunk the night before and decided to sleep it off on the road “as if it were their own bed”.

After confirming they were unharmed and posed no danger to others, officers woke them up and advised them to head home to rest.

Incident draws mixed reactions from the public

The post drew a wide range of reactions on social media.

Some commenters commended the men for not drink-driving, joking that their only offence was worrying their wives by not returning home.

Translation: Better to sleep it off anywhere than to drink and drive. They didn’t trouble anyone, except maybe their wives.

Others, however, voiced concern over the potential danger.

One user pointed out that had a passing driver not seen them in time, the situation could have turned deadly.

Another criticised the police response as too lenient, arguing that a formal record or warning should have been issued.

Translation: How could the police just let them go? The three may have violated the law or committed a minor offence. At the very least, a report should’ve been filed. This shows weak enforcement, yet innocent people often face checkpoints, intimidation, and extortion.
