Teens store water in rubbish bins for splashing during Songkran

A group of teens in Thailand drew criticism after they were filmed splashing passersby with water from rubbish bins during Songkran, or Thai New Year.

In the viral video posted on X on Tuesday (14 April), the teens were seen using small basins to splash passersby on the road with water from several trash bins lined up on the roadside.

Young children were also seen near the rubbish bins, holding water guns.

The OP wrote that the use of contaminated water was one of the reasons why he did not go out to celebrate.

“Getting splashed and then seeing a trash can as a water bucket… do you guys enjoy that?” they questioned.

In a separate post, shared on the same day, the OP uploaded a clip of a woman filling a tube with water that was flowing on the road.

However, the OP did not disclose where the videos were taken.

Using dirty water in Songkran, local netizens unsurprised

Netizens were repulsed by the teens’ use of dirty water during the festival. But many were not surprised, given how long the problem has existed.

They added that they have stopped joining the festival because of these, with one user claiming they had suffered severe gastrointestinal and urinary tract infections from being blasted in the mouth with dirty water during Songkran.

Translation: F***, that’s why I quit playing Songkran. I remember the last time was over 10 years ago. I got blasted right in the mouth by some asshole. After that, I ended up with a severe gastrointestinal infection, plus a brutal urinary tract infection. We’re talking explosive diarrhoea and pissing blood. Yeah, the doc suspected it came from the dirty-ass water they use for Songkran.

Another commenter alleged that allergy medication, painkillers, eyedrops and anti-itch creams have recently been in demand at pharmacies, likely due to the use of dirty water during the festival.

Translation: A pharmacist friend told me that, in the last two to three days, allergy meds, painkillers, eye wash solutions, laxatives, and anti-itch creams have been selling like hotcakes. Nearly 100 cases a day. Probably ’cause folks are dealing with conditions like this. Especially with how freaking filthy the canal water is—even if it keeps flowing nonstop.

Meanwhile, one user suggested reporting the incident to the authorities.

They hope that regulations will be issued so that the festival experience will improve next time.

Translation: Can we report to the police to get them fined? We have evidence. We should issue regulations right away for hygiene reasons, so that next year and beyond will be better.
