Electricity & town gas tariffs set to rise from 1 July amid higher global fuel costs

Electricity tariffs to increase by 17%, town gas tariffs to increase by 7.1% from July to Sept

Households in Singapore will pay more for electricity and town gas from 1 July to 30 Sept, as higher global fuel prices continue to push up energy costs amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The latest adjustments were announced separately by SP Group and City Energy on 30 June.

Electricity tariffs up 17% for Q3 2026

In its media release, SP Group said electricity tariffs will increase by 17.0%, or 4.64 cents per kWh (before GST), compared with the previous quarter. The revised rates will apply from 1 July to 30 Sept.

For households in four-room HDB flats, the average monthly electricity bill will increase by about S$17.14 before GST.

The overall tariff, which includes non-households, will rise by an average of 17.5%, or 4.66 cents per kWh.

SP Group said the increase is based on higher natural gas prices recorded between 1 April and 15 June. These were influenced by elevated global fuel costs linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

SP Group said that electricity tariffs are reviewed quarterly in line with guidelines from the Energy Market Authority (EMA), using fuel price data from the preceding period.

The company also noted that tariff changes typically lag behind global price movements, meaning earlier fluctuations are only reflected in subsequent quarters.

This explains why the previous quarter saw a modest 2.1% increase, as it only captured the spiked fuel prices between the onset of the Middle East conflict on 28 Feb and 15 March.

Town gas tariffs up 7.1%

In a separate announcement, City Energy said town gas tariffs (before 9% GST) will increase by 7.1%, or 1.56 cents per kWh.

This brings the tariff from 21.92 cents to 23.48 cents per kWh for the same period.

City Energy said the revision is also driven by higher fuel costs between 1 April and 15 June, similarly affected by developments in the Middle East.

Like electricity tariffs, town gas prices are reviewed quarterly under EMA guidelines and reflect earlier movements in global fuel markets.

Prices could ease if global conditions stabilise

Both SP Group and City Energy noted that the situation in the Middle East remains uncertain.

They added that if global fuel prices stabilise or decline in the coming months, electricity and gas tariffs for the next review period could potentially ease.
