Singapore driver concerned by three boys riding e-bikes on road without helmets

Three young boys were spotted riding two e-bikes on a busy road towards Bendemeer without wearing helmets by a concerned driver.

Boys riding e-bikes on busy road

The incident took place last Friday (14 Aug) at about 3.57pm, according to an MS News reader who shared their dashcam footage.

The short clip showed two boys riding on one e-bike, while another was riding solo.

At the start of the video, the two e-bikes could be seen moving in a single file in front of the contributor’s vehicle.

Subsequently, they went between two vehicles, overtook one of them, and started riding side-by-side.

The footage then ended with the two e-bikes cruising behind a bus and a car, respectively.

All three boys did not appear to be wearing helmets as they rode on the busy road.

Driver ‘concerned and shocked’ by boys’ actions

The footage was taken by Mr B, an executive, while driving from Potong Pasir towards Bendemeer.

Speaking to MS News, he said his initial reaction was of concern and shock after seeing the three young boys, whom he believed were secondary school students.

He questioned whether their parents were aware of their reckless behaviour.

“Are the schools educating them that riding e-scooters on the road without helmets is an offence?” he asked.

Mr B also said the boys appeared to be treating the road like they were on a casual ride in the park.

He was also concerned that they were not riding in a single file on the left side of the road. They were seen riding in the middle of the road and did not signal with their hands when changing lanes.

“They underestimate the danger and seriousness that can impact their future permanently,” he said.

Loved ones will be the ones affected the most

Mr B warned that an accident could leave a young rider paralysed or result in even more serious injuries.

He also added that their loved ones would be the ones suffering the most for a “foolish act” on the road.

He shared that he did not report the incident to any authorities as he wanted to “give them a chance”.

The contributor added that he believed incidents involving young riders on roads are becoming increasingly common.

Mr B also observed that, despite many drivers on the road, no one seemed to have posted about the incident.

When asked whether this was his first time encountering something like this, he said: “Not the first time. I saw old people riding e-scooters along Kallang Bahru area before.”

Cyclists and PAB riders must wear helmets on roads

According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), all cyclists and power-assisted bicycle (PAB) riders must adhere to a set of rules when riding on roads.

For example, all cyclists and PAB riders must wear a helmet when cycling on roads.

They should also keep as far left as possible and let other vehicles overtake them safely.

Cyclists and PAB riders are also advised to ride single file on single-lane roads and during bus lane operating hours.
