Peter Cullen dies aged 85, best known for roles in ‘Transformers’ and ‘Winnie the Pooh’
Canadian actor Peter Cullen, best known as the voice of Optimus Prime in the ‘Transformers’ franchise, died at the age of 85 on Wednesday (26 Aug) at his home in Los Angeles.
His agent confirmed his death to The Hollywood Reporter, sharing a statement from his loved ones that said he “passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family” and was “held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide”.

They also asked fans to honour his legacy by serving their communities and leading others with “compassion, integrity, and loyalty”, while remembering a phrase closely associated with Cullen and Optimus Prime:
Be strong enough to be gentle.
Best known as Optimus Prime in ‘Transformers’ franchise
Cullen was born in Montreal, Quebec, and began working professionally in television and voice acting in the late 1960s.
Over a career spanning more than six decades, his distinctive deep voice became a familiar presence across animated series, films, video games, and commercials.
His early credits included Dr Bruce Banner and the Hulk in ‘Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends’, as well as Red Skull and other characters in ‘Spider-Man’.
He also became well known as the gloomy Eeyore in Disney’s ‘Winnie the Pooh’ productions, while his other work included providing the creature vocal effects for the alien in the original 1987 ‘Predator’ film.

The role that would come to define his career arrived in 1984, when Cullen was cast as Autobot leader Optimus Prime in the original ‘Transformers’ animated series.
More than two decades later, he returned for Michael Bay’s 2007 live-action ‘Transformers’ film and continued portraying Optimus across subsequent movies, animated productions, and video games.

Cullen remained closely tied to the character for decades, returning even after ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ in 2017 for films including ‘Bumblebee’ and ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’.

His contribution to the franchise was formally recognised in 2010, when Hasbro named him one of the first four human inductees into the Transformers Hall of Fame.
A career that stretched far beyond ‘Transformers’
Beyond his best-known roles, Cullen’s career spanned a wide range of animated productions, films, video games, trailers, and commercials.
He also provided Eeyore’s voice for Disneyland’s ‘The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh’ attraction, which opened in California in 2003.
Other credits included vocal work for King Kong in the 1976 ‘King Kong’ remake and Mario in segments of the animated series ‘Saturday Supercade’.
Despite the breadth of his career, Optimus Prime remained the role most closely associated with Cullen, with his performance helping shape the character for generations of ‘Transformers’ fans.
