Father drowns after trying to save son who fell into water
A father drowned after jumping into the water at the Tien Nu Waterfall tourist area in Lang Son, Vietnam, about 170km northeast of Hanoi, on Tuesday (1 Sept).
The 42-year-old tourist from Hanoi was trying to save his son, who had slipped and fell into the water.
Boy slipped and fell into water
According to local news reports, the incident occurred at around 3pm.
The family was visiting the waterfall when the boy slipped, fell into the strong waterfall current, and appeared to be drowning.

Seeing this, the father immediately jumped into the water and swam towards his son to rescue him.
The child was later safely brought ashore with help from everyone. However, the father was swept away by the rapid current and subsequently went missing.
Father’s body located downstream
Rescuers received a report regarding the incident two hours later and deployed a specialised vehicle, rescue equipment and personnel to the scene, Laodong reported.
Throughout the night, police, military, militia, and locals searched for the missing man.
At around 7am on Wednesday (2 Sept), rescuers found the man’s body downstream, about 300 metres away from the site of the accident.

After an examination and standard procedures were completed, the victim’s body was handed over to his family for funeral rites.
Authorities are still investigating and are yet to confirm the exact cause of the incident.
Heavy rains in late August caused strong water current
According to VN Express, it was not rainy on the day of the incident.
However, heavy rains in the area in late August caused strong water flow, prompting the management of the tourist area to place warning signs around the waterfall.
Following the tragic incident, the Management Board of Tien Nu Waterfall Eco-tourism Area temporarily suspended all activities from 3pm on 1 Sept to ensure visitors’ safety.
It also said it will contact tourists who have made reservations, and will update the public on the attraction’s reopening time on official information channels.
