Singaporeans share the changes they noticed as they got older and more mature

Growing older may not always come with a dramatic milestone or drastic changes. Sometimes, it is simply realising that staying up past midnight is no longer worth it.

Singaporeans on Reddit shared the small habits and mindset shifts that made them realise they were not getting any younger.

Noticing the subtle changes as we get older

The discussion on r/askSingapore was started by a Redditor who said they were “no longer in [their] 20s”.

Among the changes they noticed were feeling full more easily, taking short naps after meals, struggling to stay awake past 1am and even catching up on work before the workday begins.

The Original Poster (OP) also said they had started valuing their time more when family and friends were available.

They had begun sending reels and videos to friends, doomscrolling philosophy content and exercising on rest days.

Fish oil and gut health supplements had also made their way into the OP’s diet and routine.

Lastly, they reflected that their parents were already in their early 70s and might only have “up to 20 years” left to interact with them.

Netizens share changes as they got older

A Redditor also shared how they had become “more interested in discounts than gossip”, to which another fellow Redditor replied that they were into “snatching discount vouchers on Shopee” now.

Prioritising health was the OP’s first change

Speaking to MS News, the OP, Alvin, 31, said he started the thread to compare the difference “between two years ago and now”.

When asked what the first change he noticed as he entered his 30s, he said: “I tend to prioritise my health more by being more disciplined with my routine. I no longer force my body to consume more or sleep less.”

Alvin, who works in the manufacturing industry, also shared that there has been a significant change diet-wise.

Previously, he was able to eat much more during and after a meal, but now his appetite has reduced considerably.

“I no longer crave for buffets too,” he said.

He also shared that the most unexpected change was seeing his parent age faster than he had expected.

“My parent was unexpectedly diagnosed with a critical illness at an early stage. It meant that I had to take on more responsibilities, while trying to balance work, my personal life, and spending time with my family.”
