Man calls out S’pore moviegoers using phones at ‘max brightness’, confrontation nearly escalates into fight

Man calls out inconsiderate moviegoers using phones at maximum brightness

A moviegoer in Singapore has taken to Reddit to vent about what he described as a frustrating lack of movie etiquette.

This was supposedly after two middle-aged men allegedly used their phones at “max brightness” during a movie screening.

Moviegoer laments lack of movie etiquette

Sharing his experience on r/askSingapore on 14 Sept, the Original Poster (OP) said he had gone to the cinema with his wife last week.

According to him, the movie had only just started when two men in their 40s, seated two rows in front, started using their phones with their screens at full brightness.

The OP said he initially leaned over and asked them to stop using their phones but they allegedly replied: “I won’t stop using it, what can you do?”

He shared that he subsequently lost his temper and began cursing at them.

His outburst eventually led to the two men putting their phones away.

Some moviegoers talking throughout the movie

However, that was just the beginning of his troubles as other moviegoers were talking throughout “like it is their home”.

The OP tried to approach cinema staff regarding this issue, but claimed the staff merely acknowledged him before walking away.

Things escalated after the movie ended, when the two men allegedly signalled for the OP to “settle” the issue outside.

The OP said he agreed to speak with them, but the conversation became heated, with the two men allegedly attempting to escalate the situation into a fight.

He said he considered “giving in to rage” but thankfully his wife held him back.

The couple eventually walked away, ending the confrontation.

The OP then asked netizens whether it is “impossible to watch a movie nicely” in Singapore and what netizens would have done in his shoes.

Netizens respect OP for speaking up

The post sparked a lively discussion, with many netizens praising the OP for calling out bad behaviour in the cinema.

A netizen praised the OP for a “good job” and standing up to “poor behaviour in public spaces”.

Another netizen suggested keeping the connectivity and internet speed inside the screening hall “to a minimum” to reduce phone usage.
