Woman gives up after driving around Singapore trying to locate son’s lost wallet using AirTag

A mother spent an hour driving around Singapore trying to locate her son’s lost wallet using an Apple AirTag, only to give up eventually.

Son allegedly left wallet on bus during school excursion

In a TikTok video posted by @44catt on Thursday (15 Oct), the Original Poster (OP) documented her attempt to track down the missing wallet.

“Going to hunt for my son’s wallet because he left it on the bus on the excursion,” the OP said.

She then followed the AirTag’s location updates, which appeared to move between different parts of Singapore.

At one point, she asked which part of Yishun the bus was,  saying that its location seemed to change whenever she got close.

“Every time we are near, it moved again,” she said. “Hopefully, he went to Chong Pang for supper or whatever.”

She then drove into a car park in the Chong Pang area, hoping the wallet might be nearby. However, she wasn’t able to find any buses in the carpark.

“My God, he’s at Admiralty MRT now,” she exclaimed, questioning why the location kept changing throughout the night.

OP gives up after repeated attempts to track wallet

The search continued to frustrate her as the AirTag’s reported location shifted again, with the OP saying she was always one step behind.

She also expressed disappointment with the tracking device, saying that its location information did not seem to be live.

“AirTag is really not that great,” she said.

The AirTag later appeared to be back at the Singapore Sports School, prompting the OP to call off the search.

“I give up already. I’m going to go home. Mission failed,” she said.

Reflecting on the ordeal, she added that she had spent an hour driving around “like an idiot” while following the device.

Netizens offer advice to OP

A netizen explained that an Apple AirTag relies on nearby Apple devices to detect it via Bluetooth and securely relay its location through Apple’s Find My network.

A commenter advised the OP to put her contact number in her son’s wallet, but she said she had already done so and the bus company could not find it.

A TikTok user suggested contacting someone, but the OP said she had already done so and had yet to hear back from her son’s teacher.

Finally tracked down the bus and found the wallet

The OP, Catt, 32, a tattoo artist, told MS News she tried looking for the wallet on 14 Oct between 8pm and 9pm.

She explained that the AirTag location wasn’t updated in real time, so she couldn’t track it accurately.

By the time its location was updated by nearby Apple devices, it would take her another 10 to 20 minutes to drive to the new location.

“I had already followed it from Canberra to Yishun, Admiralty, and Woodlands before I finally gave up,” Catt said.

When asked what was in her son’s wallet, she said: “Just his EZ-Link, condo access card and less than S$30.”

Catt later updated in a separate TikTok post that she finally managed to track down the bus. Her son then found his wallet under one of the bus seats.
