Motorcycle referred for enhanced checks at Tuas Checkpoint

Last Wednesday (21 Oct), the Malaysia-registered motorcycle attempted to enter Singapore via Tuas Checkpoint, ICA said.

However, ICA officers referred it for enhanced checks.

Five bundles were subsequently uncovered in a tote bag that was hidden under a raincoat in the motorcycle’s top box.

They were suspected to contain controlled drugs.

S$122K worth of drugs seized from motorcycle

The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) was immediately alerted, and officers conducted further checks on the motorcycle and the man who was riding it.

Eventually, about 1,924g of heroin and 164g of ‘Ice’ were seized, estimated to be worth more than S$222,000.

That amount could potentially feed the addiction of about 1,010 abusers for a week, ICA said.

ICA pledges to continue checkpoint checks

The 24-year-old Malaysian man was arrested for attempted smuggling of drugs into Singapore. Investigations are ongoing.

ICA said it would continue to work closely with CNB to prevent drug smuggling attempts across Singapore’s borders.

It also pledged to remain vigilant in its security checks at the checkpoints to “deter and detect” the smuggling of undesirable persons, weapons, explosives and other contraband.

Death penalty possible for trafficking more than 15g of heroin

Trafficking in a controlled drug, offering to do so, or any act or offer in preparation for or for the purpose of trafficking, is an offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1973.

This applies whether the offender does so on their own behalf or on somebody else’s behalf, even if that other person is overseas.

Those convicted of trafficking more than 15g of diamorphine, or “pure heroin”, may face the mandatory death penalty.
