19-year-old in Hong Kong jailed for acid attack on Singaporean tourist
On Thursday (29 Oct), a teen in Hong Kong was sentenced to eight years in jail for a horrific acid attack that left a Singaporean tourist disfigured.
Earlier this month, the defendant, 19-year-old Anson Kew, pleaded guilty to one count of throwing corrosive fluid with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Teen threw acid on tourist thrice
According to The Standard, the attack occurred on 9 June 2025 in Hong Kong’s Wan Chai District.
At the time, the victim, 36-year-old Jiang Wen, was outside a building, about to enter a private car.
Kew, then 17 years old, approached her and threw acid at her three times. Notably, he was dressed in black and wore a hat and mask.

The sulfuric acid, with a concentration of around 70%, hit Ms Jiang’s face and limbs.
As the victim collapsed in pain, the perpetrator fled the scene.
Attack hospitalised Singaporean for 61 days
Ms Jiang was left with second-degree burns on over 10% of her body.
She spent 61 days in a hospital in Hong Kong, receiving multiple damaged tissue removal and skin graft procedures.

Eventually, she returned to Singapore for more treatment.
However, the incident left her with permanent scars and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Teen promised money in exchange for attack
According to CNA, Kew later surrendered to the police and confessed to authorities that he was promised HK$10,000 (S$1,630) in return for the attack.
Background reports on Kew also revealed a history of crime from as early as 14 years old.
After dropping out of school when he was 16, he fell in with the wrong crowd. He then began abusing drugs and effectively “joined” a transnational organised crime syndicate.
The judge found Kew’s rehabilitation prospects grim.
With no other mitigating factors to consider other than his guilty plea, the judge sentenced the teen to eight years in jail.
