AFC Asian Cup postponed to December 2027, amid instability in region

AFC Committee releases decision to postpone Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced on Tuesday (3 Nov) that the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 will be delayed till December 2027.

The competition was originally set to kick off in January 2027.

It will now take place from 23 Dec 2027 to 21 Jan 2028.

The committee cites “current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region” as the reason for this postponement.

These include substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions across the Middle East.

The AFC will submit the new tournament dates to FIFA for formal approval.

Lions made to wait for historic return to Asian stage

This decision will mean another 11-month wait for Singapore’s first appearance at the tournament since hosting the competition in 1984.

Singapore qualified on merit for the Asian Cup finals after defeating Hong Kong 2-1 last year.

Singapore was drawn into Group C alongside Australia, Tajikistan, and Iraq.

Those group-stage matches will now take place in late December 2027 and January 2028 instead.

Extra preparation time gives coaching staff runway to rebuild

The postponement will provide the Lions’ coaching staff nearly a year of extra preparation time.

Coach Gavin Lee saw his team crash out of the ASEAN Cup at the start of last month, losing 6-0 to Causeway rivals Malaysia.

However, the extended window could also present an opportunity for younger players, such as midfielder Nathan Mao and defender Iryan Fandi, to stake their claims for a place in the team.

It would also give Cardiff City defender Perry Ng, who recently acquired Singapore citizenship, more time to integrate into the squad.

On the injury front, left-back Nur Adam Abdullah will now also be afforded the time to recover from a complete ACL tear in his right knee.

Organisers prioritise safety of teams, fans & stakeholders

The AFC also assured stakeholders that it will work closely with all partners to minimise disruptions.

It explained: “Exceptional circumstances have been created for the organisation and delivery of the competition as originally scheduled.”

Postponing the event became necessary to protect all participating teams, officials, spectators, and other stakeholders.

Commitment to ensure Lions are well prepared

On 4 Nov, Football Association Singapore (FAS) also released a statement regarding the Asian Cup 2027 delay.

FAS General Secretary Badri Ghent assured supporters that the organisation “remains committed to ensuring that the Lions are well prepared” for the delayed tournament.

The FAS promises to continue building on the team’s progress while working closely with the men’s national team staff to manage the impact of the schedule change.

The safety and well-being of our players, coaching staff, officials and supporters remain our foremost priority.
