Three boys in Guangzhou pool S$2 in change to support struggling shop owner

Three boys in China pooled 10.5 yuan (around S$2) of their own money to support a struggling shop owner after learning that he planned to close his store.

Their gesture moved him to tears.

Boys leave money behind despite owner’s refusal

On 12 Aug, three boys visited a supermarket in Guangzhou and learnt that business had been poor and the owner was preparing to close the store.

Wanting to help, the boys pooled 10.5 yuan in loose change and placed it on the counter.

“Boss, you have to hang in there!” they told him.

The store owner, Mr Chen, repeatedly declined the money and told them to keep it for themselves.

Instead, the boys left the cash behind and ran out of the shop.

Mr Chen said he fell silent and quietly wiped away tears when he saw the money on the counter.

He recalled that the boys had visited his store a few months earlier and had been encouraging him.

“Kids don’t have so many complicated thoughts,” he told local media. “When they brought the money over and placed it on my counter, I just couldn’t hold it together.”

He hopes to meet the boys again and treat them to food

On 14 Aug, Mr Chen posted a follow-up video on his personal social media account, saying that he had watched footage of the encounter many times and still became emotional whenever he saw it.

“No matter how tough or tiring things got, I pushed through and never cried,” he said.

But then one day, a group of children whom you’ve only met a few times hear that you don’t want to keep the shop open because you aren’t making any money, and they take out their own pocket money to support you.

Mr Chen said the store had been operating for five years and would close from the following month as he wanted to venture out and pursue something new.

He also said he hoped to meet the three boys again so that he could treat them to something to eat.

Their gesture drew praise online, with netizens describing them as “kind-hearted children”.
