Elderly Woman Falls After Bus Doors Close, SBS Driver Faces Disciplinary Action

Elderly Woman Falls After SBS Bus Captain Accidentally Closes Door On Her

As we age, our bodies become frailer. Naturally, the elderly might need more time to move about, especially going up and down trains and buses.

On Thursday (11 Nov), SG Road Vigilante shared a video of an elderly woman falling after the doors of an SBS Transit bus closed as she was alighting slowly.

Thankfully, the woman was not seriously injured, and she later received outpatient hospital treatment.

SBS Transit says the actions of the bus captain are unacceptable, and they are taking strict disciplinary action against him.

The video, taken on Tuesday (9 Nov) at about 2.38pm, showed the elderly woman and several other passengers alighting the bus.

The floor was visibly wet, and the woman could be seen holding onto the handle while carefully making her way down. She took a little longer than the other passengers.

Unfortunately, the bus captain closed the doors, probably thinking everyone had alighted.

With one foot and hand still in the bus, the woman panicked and banged on the doors, hoping to alert the driver.

However, it was too late. The woman had to let go of the handle as the door shut fully, and she fell on her back.

After realising the incident, the bus captain reopened one of the doors. Another bus captain who was nearby rushed to the woman’s aid.

SBS Transit has taken strict disciplinary action against driver

In response to MS News’ queries, SBS Transit corporate communications senior vice president Ms Tammy Tan said in a statement that the bus captain’s actions are “unacceptable”.

Hence, the company has taken strict disciplinary action against him and will be monitoring his performance closely.

Fortunately, she added that the elderly woman was not seriously injured and received outpatient hospital treatment following the incident.

Ms Tan said they are in touch with her family to extend their care and concern. They have also offered their assistance to them.

Hope bus captain will be more mindful of passengers in future

We’re glad the elderly woman did not sustain severe injuries from the accident and hope she recovers soon.

While this might be an honest mistake, bus captains must always look out for passengers, especially vulnerable groups, such as the elderly.

Hopefully, this incident will prompt the bus captain involved to be more mindful of his passengers in the future.
