A wedding in Vietnam went viral after guests rolled up their trousers and waded through knee-deep floodwaters to celebrate the newlyweds.

The wedding of 28-year-olds Duong My and Thai Huynh took place at the bride’s family home in Quang Tri Province on 13 Sept.

The wedding planner, Le Phuoc Sanh, shared videos showing guests standing in around 40cm-deep water as they enjoyed the wedding feast, with some opting to stand while eating.

The video attracted widespread attention online, with many netizens sending their blessings to the couple while expressing sympathy for residents affected by flooding in central Vietnam.

Floodwaters arrived hours before banquet

Meteorological authorities reported that a tropical depression, merging with an intertropical convergence zone, dumped heavy rain over Central Vietnam between 13 Sept and 14 Sept.

This resulted in 60mm to 100mm of rainfall from southern Nghe An to northern Quang Tri, VN Express reported.

In Quang Tri, the rain caused water levels in the nearby Thach Han River to rise, leading to flooding.

Mr Thai said that on 13 Sept, the family prepared 10 tables of food for a small gathering with relatives and neighbours that afternoon.

However, at around 2pm, floodwater began entering the low-lying home. By 6pm, the water had risen to around knee height.

The groom said the flooding was unexpected as it was not usually the flood season in his hometown.

“So it wasn’t a case of us deliberately going ahead with the wedding despite knowing there would be flooding,” he clarified.

Guests stayed cheerful despite conditions

Despite the situation, the family and their guests remained calm.

“Since it was a small get-together, and the attendees were all close friends and family, everyone decided to proceed as planned,” the groom shared.

Guests adapted to the unusual circumstances by rolling up their trousers and stepping into the water to eat and celebrate.

According to VN Express, the family also moved electrical equipment to higher areas to prevent accidents.

The wedding planner who shared footage of the celebration online said it was the first time he attended a wedding banquet held in floodwaters despite working in the industry for years.

Flood receded before main ceremony

According to Vietnam Net, the families considered postponing the next day’s wedding activities if the water did not subside.

Fortunately, the floodwaters receded by around 3am on 14 Sept. Relatives then stayed up all night cleaning and preparing the house.

Later that day, the bride-asking ceremony went according to plan, bringing relief to both families.

Mr Thai said the unusual circumstances made their wedding more memorable.

“Without the unexpected flooding, we would have had an ordinary wedding like any other couple,” he said. “But because of those images of the flood, our big day became a little more special and memorable.”
