Electric mahjong table fire extinguished by public before SCDF arrived
An 86-year-old man was sent to the hospital last Saturday (8 Aug) night after an electric mahjong table caught fire in Tampines.
In a TikTok livestream, the wall outside a window on the ninth floor of the block was observed to be blackened.

Police & SCDF arrive at Tampines block
The footage showed at least two fire engines in the carpark next to the block, with firefighters at the scene.

More firefighters and police officers were in the void deck, part of which was cordoned off.
Paramedics appeared to be attending to someone sitting at the void deck.

A photo shared on Facebook by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth David Neo revealed that several Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) vehicles were deployed, including an ambulance.

Tampines fire involved electric mahjong table in 9th-floor unit
In response to queries from MS News, SCDF said it was alerted to the fire at about 9.30pm on 8 Aug.
It involved an electric mahjong table in a unit on the ninth floor of Block 449 Tampines Street 42.
The blaze was extinguished by members of the public using buckets of water before SCDF arrived.
Elderly man sent to hospital, another person injured
The Singapore Police Force (SPF), which was alerted at the same time, told MS News that an 86-year-old man was sent to the hospital in a conscious state.
He was conveyed to Singapore General Hospital, SCDF said.
Another person was assessed for minor injuries, but they declined to be sent to the hospital.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Resident discharged from hospital
Mr Neo, who is also an MP for Tampines GRC, said in his Facebook post that the resident has since been discharged from the hospital.
He visited the man the next day and was glad to know that he was “doing well”, he added.

Volunteers from the Residents Network and Town Council were coming together to help him, he noted, promising to continue assisting the family.
The minister also thanked neighbours and SCDF for helping to put out the fire. Their actions meant that the flames were contained to the bedroom where it started, he revealed.
