Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman, has announced his retirement from politics ahead of the upcoming General Election (GE2025).

Having served five terms since entering politics in 2001, he said he is stepping aside to make way for new leadership.

Reflecting on his journey in a Facebook post on Monday (21 April), he described it as “deeply enriching and humbling”.

Dr Maliki also expressed his appreciation to residents he has served over the years in Sembawang GRC, East Coast GRC, and as Mayor of Southeast CDC, saying: “I will always treasure our shared memories.”

Pledging support for the East Coast GRC team

Earlier this month, Dr Maliki confirmed that he would not be contesting in East Coast GRC at GE2025.

His seat will be filled by People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate Hazlina Abdul Halim.

Following his announcement, Dr Maliki said his priority is to ensure a smooth handover and to rally support for the East Coast GRC team in the upcoming election.

“I am confident they will serve residents well,” he added.

Gratitude to SM Lee & grassroots network

Dr Maliki expressed his heartfelt thanks to grassroots leaders, volunteers, and constituency staff, acknowledging their “selfless service” throughout his political journey.

He also extended his gratitude to Senior Minister (SM) Lee Hsien Loong for the opportunity to serve in various ministries over the years.

“I thank SM Lee for entrusting me with responsibilities as a Political Office Holder since 2004,” he wrote.

Finally, he paid tribute to his family — his wife Sadiah, and their children Lidia and Adli — thanking them for their “unconditional love, personal sacrifices, daily prayers”, and for being his “pillars of strength” throughout his political career.
