Police Find Man Dead At Serangoon Flat After Neighbours Report Rancid Smell

A 54-year-old man was found dead in his ninth-storey flat at Block 223A Serangoon Avenue 4 on Monday (17 Apr).

His neighbours noticed a strong smell coming from his unit, before police received an alert from the area.

Investigations are ongoing, but authorities do not suspect foul play.

The Straits Times (ST) reported that at around 7.30pm on 17 Apr, police received an alert regarding a rancid smell at a unit at Block 223A Serangoon Avenue 4.

Officers arrived at the scene and found a man lying motionless in the flat. Medical personnel then pronounced him dead, stated Shin Min Daily News.

Speaking to ST, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said their assistance was not necessary for the incident.

Police are currently conducting an investigation into the matter, but do not suspect foul play.

Rancid smell evident at scene

A reporter from Shin Min Daily News who went down to the site claimed that a rancid smell was evident in the vicinity.

Police had cordoned off the area, with the corridor full of various items such as plastic bags and cardboard boxes that were found in the two-bedroom unit.

Reporters believed that the sheer amount of items in the flat made it challenging for officials to clear out the body. They allegedly had to remove the hoarded objects first.

Meanwhile, a neighbour told Shin Min Daily News that the deceased was reclusive and often wore dirty clothes.

Despite his introversion and rare interactions with neighbours, the man would apparently smile and greet them on occasion.

Another neighbour said that he would usually rummage through rubbish dumps for items such as the ones in the corridor.

He would allegedly do so in the early hours of the morning at around 2am to 3am, sometimes going on for up till 4am on some days.

This resulted in his neighbours waking up from the noise. Some of the items which he placed in the corridor also posed as potential fire hazards.

Due to these concerns, the neighbour had earlier reported him to the authorities, with officials reportedly coming down to investigate the situation. The outcome of the report and investigation is unclear.
