Orchard Road Christmas Light-Up 2023 Returns With 3 Christmas Villages & Street Party

It’s that time of the year again, when the famed shopping precinct of Orchard will strike wonders in everyone’s eyes with the entire street decked out in enchanting lights and whimsical decorations.

From 16 Nov to 1 Jan, the Orchard Road light-up, ‘Christmas on a Great Street’, comes with a line-up of fun activities for visitors, especially families, to spend quality time.

Amid the return of three Christmas villages, there will be a Christmas Eve street party along Orchard Road on 24 Dec.

Guest-of-honour President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will be present to officiate this year’s light-up ceremony at Shaw House Urban Plaza on 16 Nov.

In a press release, the Orchard Road Business Association (ORBA) revealed that this year’s light-up was a milestone event, as it is the 40th year of the display. ORBA is also celebrating its 25th anniversary.

“In keeping with the theme, ORBA invites Singaporeans to dream like a child,” ORBA said.

It’s easy to see the inspiration behind the designs, as the light-up is set to transport viewers to a childlike dreamscape.

Visitors can start by entering Tanglin Road, where a magnificent arch with glittery clouds stands Instagram-ready.

With the theme of A Child’s Dreamscape, the lights will stretch for 3.1km alongside 162 lampposts and 106 trees sporting decorations.

Don’t miss out on the central arch either, which will stand at an impressive height of 14.2m.

Featuring a combination of clouds, stars and candy canes, we can’t help but be reminded of simpler times when we built castles in the air as a kid.

The timings during which these displays will light up are as follows:

  • Sunday to Thursday, 6.30pm to 12am
  • Friday and Saturday, 6.30pm to 2am
  • Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, 6.30pm to 6am

First-ever Christmas Eve street party in 2023 along Orchard

The highlight of this year’s projection is the Christmas Eve street party, featuring performances by the NCC Command Band from Swiss Cottage Secondary School.

Parents coming with young kids can also get up close and personal with Santa at meet-and-greet sessions.

If you start feeling peckish during the event, you can also check out the food trucks and a Christmas Market to satiate your hunger.

With four DJs and a countdown to Christmas, there’s more than enough to keep the party going well into the night.

Taking place on 24 Dec from 8pm to 12.15am, the stretch from Paterson junction to Bideford junction will be the venue for the event. As such, it will remain closed to traffic from 6pm onwards.

Three Great Christmas Villages return

This year, three Great Christmas Villages will make their feature along Orchard Road as well, up from one last year.

Filled with carnival rides and games, they will be situated outside Shaw House, Ngee Ann City and Plaza Singapura for the first time.

The first village at Shaw House Urban Plaza will start on 24 Nov, where a double-storey carousel and Ferris wheel await visitors.

The remaining two at Plaza Singapura and Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza will begin from 1 to 8 Dec, respectively, containing rides, a bouncy castle and a balloon dome for the former.

Opening hours will be extended till 12.30am on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve for the village at Ngee Ann City.

More information about the line-up of activities and offers will be available here.
