Employee concerned by group chat of female colleagues rating male coworkers

A Singapore employee has revealed that some of their female colleagues allegedly created a private group chat to talk about their male colleagues.

Sharing their discovery on r/askSingapore on 28 April, the Redditor asked if it was “normal workplace behaviour”.

The Original Poster (OP) also wondered if the situation was serious enough to be raised to Human Resources (HR).

According to the subreddit thread, the chat group only included female staff members who were single.

The OP claimed that conversations in the group centred around male colleagues’ appearance, behaviour, social status, and even family background.

Situation makes OP uncomfortable

While acknowledging that workplace gossip and cliques are common, they said this particular situation made them feel uneasy.

They questioned where the line should be drawn between casual chatter and conduct that could be considered unprofessional.

The OP also highlighted what they saw as a double standard.

If male employees had created a similar chat discussing female colleagues, it would likely be viewed as inappropriate and quickly reported, they said.

They then asked Redditors whether they considered such behaviour normal, and how someone should handle the matter without escalating tensions at work.

Most netizens advise OP to ignore it

In response, many Redditors advised the OP against reporting it to HR.

A netizen called the group chat “creepy” but urged them not to get involved unless they had “hard evidence”.

A Redditor agreed, saying they won’t report unless the chat content was sexual in nature.

A commenter pointed out that such chat groups are “very normal”, and that some supervisors and managers also do the same to discuss incompetent employees.

Another netizen felt otherwise, calling the private chat group “unacceptable”, and asking the OP to report it.
