Four-year-old dies after grandmother allegedly puts rat poison in milk
A four-year-old girl in Don Carlos, Bukidnon, Philippines, died after she drank milk laced with rat poison on 13 Aug.
It is believed that her grandmother had poisoned the milk.
The older woman also drank the poisoned milk, resulting in her death.
Girl’s grandparents had an argument
According to PhilStar, initial police investigation revealed that the girl’s grandparents argued before the incident.
Authorities even arrived at their home to mediate.

“The grandmother’s sibling called the police hotline,” Don Carlos Deputy Chief of Police P/Lt Rufina Bayarcal told GMA News.
When police arrived, the girl’s grandfather was gone.
“He said he left to keep their argument [from escalating]… because the grandmother was going wild,” the deputy chief said.
Grandmother also died after drinking poisoned milk
Later, the grandmother prepared milk, in which she allegedly added rat poison.
She then made her granddaughter drink it before drinking some herself.
The police were alerted once more, and when they arrived, they found the girl throwing up.
The girl and her grandmother were sent to Bukidnon Provincial Hospital past 8pm.
The four-year-old was pronounced dead at around 1am on 14 Aug, while her grandmother passed away at 4pm on the same day.
Grandmother allegedly attempts suicide following arguments
At the family’s home, police found the feeding bottle believed to be laced with poison, as well as two packets of zinc phosphide, which is commonly used as a rodenticide.

They are investigating whether the incident is related to a family dispute.
The deputy chief said the grandfather claimed he and her wife often argued, after which the grandmother would attempt suicide.
Police are still gathering details regarding the alleged poisoning incident.
Girl’s mother was killed by partner in 2023
The girl’s mother was killed in 2023 after being stabbed with a glass shard by the girl’s father, who was her live-in partner.
A video of the incident also shows the man setting the girl precariously on the couch, causing her to fall to the floor.

The man is currently serving time in jail.
After her mother’s death, the girl was taken care of by her grandparents.
