Democrats take control of US House and Senate in 2026 midterms
Frustrations over Donald Trump’s second presidency has led to voters handing control of both the United States (US) House of Representatives and Senate over to the Democrats.
Following the 2026 US Midterm General Election on 3 Nov, many historically Republican Senate seats have also been flipped.
Some states that the Republicans had won in double digits just two years prior have instead opted to go blue.
Historic flips
Perhaps the most shocking state that was flipped is Texas.
Long thought to be a Republican stronghold, James Talarico was voted the first Democratic Senator from Texas in 33 years.
The Democratic wins in Texas were not just limited to Congress either.
In the Governor race, Gina Hinojosa beat incumbent Greg Abbott and became the first Latina governor of Texas. The Lone Star State has not seen a Democrat governor this century.
In Kansas, Adam Hamilton beat incumbent Roger Marshall for the Senate seat. He will be the first Democratic Senator from the state since 1939.
Both North and South Carolina’s Senate seats were also flipped — with South Carolina’s not having seen a Democratic Senator in 28 years.
The South Carolina flip was perhaps one of the most personal losses for Trump, as he had handpicked Lindsey Graham’s sister to succeed her late brother after his sudden death earlier this year.
In Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson beat Republican Susan Collins for the Senate. Collins had been seeking her sixth term in office.

Trump says he accepts election results
While Trump had signaled that he was prepared to use his veto powers should Democrats seize control of Congress, he appears to have accepted the results.

According to PBS, Trump commended the Democrats and said they did a “good job”.
However, he was also quick to say that the voters did not like the Republican candidates being fielded.
On the campaign trail leading to the midterms, Trump had frequently asked voters to pretend he was on the ballot.
“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” he wrote on social media.
According to AP, many voters said they were voting explicitly in opposition to Trump. Many also cited concerns about corruption nearly as highly as the economy.
