Guess who’s back, back again
2011 Presidential Candidate Dr Tan Cheng Bock has confirmed that he will be running for presidency once again.
He made the announcement on Friday (11 Mar) morning at a press conference. The next Presidential Election has to be held by 2017, which means he will have approximately 17 months to run his presidential campaign.
Dr Tan won 34.95% of the votes in 2011 — less than 1% fewer than eventual President Tony Tan.
Incumbent president Tony Tan has yet to declare his candidacy, but Dr Tan’s premature announcement must suggest he is quietly confident that he will be able to make it into the Istana at the second try.
But the commission tho
The declaration comes as a Constitutional Commission was formed in January to review the Elected Presidency system. One of the aspects under examination is the possibility of ensuring minority candidates have the opportunity to be president.
Which means way that we choose presidents might still change even before Dr Tan starts running for president.
On Monday (7 Mar), Dr Tan posted a lengthy update on his Facebook page, reminding Singaporeans the close margin he lost by in 2011.
He also appealed Singaporeans to make ensure that the Elected Presidency system is kept, by sending submissions to the Constitutional Commission. The deadline for submissions is 21 Mar 2016.
The Commission’s recommendations will be made by the 3rd quarter of 2016.
