South Korean authorities arrest two Thai transgenders for prostitution
Police in South Korea have arrested two Thai transgenders after they made over S$500,000 through prostitution.
According to Maeil Business, authorities made the announcement on 8 July that the pair had been arrested separately in April and June.
Engaged in sex work and overstayed visa
The pair had entered South Korea in 2023. They have since spent over three years within the country after their visas expired.
To find customers, they advertised their services on LGBTQ+ dating sites. They also uploaded explicit videos of themselves onto the sites to attract potential clients.
Furthermore, they attempted to avoid arrest by not providing an exact room number for their clients.
Instead, they would ask the clients to send photos to confirm their arrival before discretely guiding them into the specific officetel unit.

The Thai nationals reportedly made between ₩100,000 to ₩210,000 per session (S$89 – S$188).
Duo referred to prosecutors
Police investigation revealed that one Thai national made ₩200 million (S$179,891) while the other made ₩400 million (S$359,782).
The pair were handed over to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office under charges of violating South Korea’s immigration laws.

The investigation team believes that there are more foreign nationals engaging in similar behaviour and are monitoring social media.
South Korea immigration control is often a hotly debated topic in Thailand.
Stories about Thai women being refused entry into South Korea often go viral, with immigration officers typically portrayed as overtly and arbitrarily strict.
