Golden Mile Food Centre To Close For Renovation, Fans & Ventilators Will Be Changed
Tucked away in the residential estate of Kampong Glam is probably one of the most underrated hawker centres in Singapore — Golden Mile Food Centre.
While it might not be as famous as the Mecca of mookata – Golden Mile Complex – located just across the road, the food centre is home to many hawker stalls that commonly make it to top 10 food lists.
However, come Dec 2020, the food centre will be temporarily closed for renovation until next March.
So if you’d like to have a taste of your favourite claypot rice or hokkien mee, we advise heading down soon.
Golden Mile Food Centre will be closed from Dec 2020 to Mar 2021
According to Lianhe Zaobao, hawkers from Golden Mile Food Centre will be taking a break during the 4-month renovation as there are no locations nearby available to set up a temporary market.
The exact date of closure has not been revealed.
Ventilators and fans will reportedly be changed during the renovation, providing future customers with a more comfortable dining experience.
However, the cramped layout is likely to stay as there are no solutions to it yet, reports Lianhe Zaobao.
The food centre has been around for around 45 years and last underwent a major renovation in 2002.
It was closed for around 6 months then.
Famous claypot rice located at the market
The food centre houses numerous hawker stalls on its first and basement levels.
One of the most well-known delicacies there is certainly Yew Chuan Claypot Rice, which has been serving the smoky dish for close to 4 decades.
Another famous stall would be 91 Fried Kway Teow Mee which literally adds a green touch to the popular flat-noodle dish.
The Food Centre has some sweet desserts too, like these ah balling – or tang yuan – available in 5 flavours. We heard the ginger soup’s perfect during rainy weather.

The building is also home to the Beach Road Army Market, which, as its name suggests, sells everything army-related from SAF ranks to military dog tags, and every serviceman’s favourite kicks — combat boots.
What will you miss most during the renovation?
If you’ve always loved dining at Golden Mile Food Centre, you’d have to wait a few months till the place reopens.
Hopefully the premises will be much nicer then, and you’ll get to enjoy your favourite dishes in comfort.
