Chinatown slashing stemmed from argument over barbershop seats, wife injured while protecting husband

Chinatown slashing victims say attack was caused by argument over outdoor seating at barbershop

The victims of last Saturday’s (27 July) Chinatown slashing incident have shed light on the cause of the shocking attack.

77-year-old man allegedly slashes couple at Chinatown Complex, gets charged in court

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, Mrs Wang, 53, said that she and her husband, 66-year-old Mr Wang, had gone to a barbershop near their home for a haircut.

While there, they got into an argument with another individual over outdoor seating.

The other party eventually left, and the couple didn’t think much of the incident afterwards.

Man returns to confront couple with knife

After their haircut, Mr and Mrs Wang headed to a nearby coffee shop for a meal.

To their shock, the man from the earlier confrontation returned, this time armed with a knife.

Mrs Wang immediately shouted to warn her husband, but she was also caught in the attack.

She was stabbed in the back — causing significant blood loss — and fell, fracturing her right foot, which already had issues.

As for Mr Wang, he sustained knife wounds to his ear and chest, as well as injuries to his arm from a hammer.

A video shared by Mrs Wang shows him attempting to defend himself with a slipper.

“The attacker only fled when someone shouted,” Mr Wang recalled. “I wanted to chase him, but I was too injured and had lost a lot of blood, so I couldn’t.”

Attack leaves couple requiring stitches & wheelchair

The assault left knife fragments embedded in Mrs Wang’s back.

While they’ve been removed, she still requires medication to prevent infection and uses a wheelchair due to her fractured foot.

Mr Wang, on the other hand, had to get four stitches in his ear and eight in his chest.

Both are currently receiving treatment at Singapore General Hospital.

The attacker, whom The Straits Times (ST) identified as 77-year-old Mun Yew Wah, was charged on Sunday (28 July) with voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon.

His case is scheduled to be heard again on 8 Aug.
