‘Cloud’ falling from the sky captured in Indonesia

A video of a “cloud” falling from the sky was recently captured in Murung Raya, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Intriguing netizens, the video quickly went viral across social media platforms on Friday evening (15 Nov).

In the 49-second clip, a white, cloud-like mass is seen slowly descending the air, while several miners working nearby approached it with curiosity.

White mass is not actually cloud

Following the video’s popularity, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Indonesia debunked the speculation that the falling mass was a cloud.

“The phenomenon is most likely not a natural cloud, but rather the condensation of water vapour or gas due to human activities occurring in mining areas,” BMKG Public Meteorology Director Andri Ramdhani explained.

According to Mr Andri, the formation of cloud-like steam can be due to the release of high-pressure gas from nearby mining activities, paired with low temperatures and high humidity.

He added that clouds cannot fall to the surface in solid masses, as their particles are very light and scattered, allowing them to stay in the atmosphere.

Furthermore, cloud particles would usually evaporate before they even reach the ground.

Netizens joke that it’s Son Goku’s cloud

Despite the scientific explanation, netizens enjoyed speculating and making funny quips about the falling “cloud”.

Many commented that it could be the Dragon Ball anime character Son Goku or Wukong from the Chinese novel Journey to the West–both of which famously ride a puff of cloud.

Meanwhile, one netizen quipped that the cloud could be tired of Indonesia’s rainy weather lately and decided to descend to land instead.
