15-year-old teenager borrows S$3.9K from loan sharks to satisfy girlfriend’s food craving
A 15-year-old teenager from Selangor reportedly owes RM13,000 (S$3,900) after borrowing money from loan sharks.
According to Malay Daily Kosmo, the bizarre reason behind his huge debt was his desire to satisfy his girlfriend’s craving for ‘siakap tiga rasa’ — a popular dish of fried barramundi cooked in a sweet, spicy, and sour sauce.

He eventually turned to Darul Muttaqin (DM), an Islamic group that assists many others like him for help.
DM Fardu Ain and Quran Studies Centre Manager, Fariz Izhar Adrus, reportedly said:
The teenager came across an advertisement on TikTok for an ‘ah long’ after his girlfriend craved the dish.
Mr Fariz said the 15-year-old might’ve turned to the loan shark as he was too embarrassed to borrow money from his parents.
Kosmo also reported that the teenager from Selangor accumulated debts from 12 loan sharks before seeking assistance from DM.
Some women reportedly surrender newborns to settle debts
DM shared that it had assisted with 3,700 cases involving Malaysians aged 15 to 60 who found themselves in trouble with loan sharks.
It reportedly receives 50 cases daily, with four out of five of these cases involving women.
Reports indicate that DM also handled cases involving women who were caught in difficult situations, such as being coerced into giving up their newborns at birth as a condition for paying interest or settling debts with illegal moneylenders.
“Once the hospital procedures are completed, the baby is handed over, and the couple has no idea where the child ends up,” DM general manager Datuk Mohd Zaki Zainol said.
