Woman in Thailand found dead with ring fingers cut off

On 16 Nov, a 67-year-old woman known as Ms Wanna was reported missing by her daughter-in-law after she failed to return from a religious ceremony at a monastery in Chonburi Province, Thailand.

She was later found dead with her ring fingers cut off in a palm plantation in Rayong Province. She was estimated to have been dead for six hours when she was found.

Additionally, her body had signs of blunt force trauma to the face and a slash on the back of her head.

The victim’s gold necklace, bracelet and two rings were also missing.

Witnesses reported seeing a white car entering the area where the body was found.

Victim’s friend found to have committed the crime

Investigations revealed that Ms Wanna’s friends offered to drive her home after the ceremony but she left with another driver after receiving a phone call.

CCTV footage showed her entering a white Toyota, which was later traced to her friend, a 57-year-old woman named Kamonwan.

She was arrested on 16 Nov, but denied her involvement during an interrogation.

Kamonwan was brought in for questioning again on 17 Nov, during which she appeared distressed.

When officials took her to a hospital for a physical exam, she was found with scratch marks on her arms and a bruise on the back of her left hand.

Furthermore, a background investigation revealed that Kamonwan previously lived and worked in the area where the deceased was found, making her familiar with it.

Motive was to rob the victim of her jewellery

Local police revealed that the accused eventually confessed to her crime during interrogations.

Kamonwan claimed that she had assaulted Ms Wanna until she died. The deceased’s hair was reportedly found stuck in her fingernails.

Further investigations revealed that on 15 Nov at 5.25pm, Kamonwan had sold the deceased’s jewellery at a gold shop.

She had received THB 88,300 (S$3,424) for two rings, a necklace, and a bracelet.

Kamonwan used a different name to sell the jewellery and did not provide an identification card, claiming that she had lost it.

It is believed that the accused intended to steal the deceased’s valuables to pay off her gambling debts.

During a reenactment of the assault, Kamonwan said that she had used an iron pipe to beat the deceased unconscious.

Unable to take the rings off the Ms Wanna’s fingers, she chopped them off.

Kamonwan then sold the victim’s jewellery and got rid of the evidence by taking her car to be washed.

She claimed that she had acted alone.
