Four Chinese nationals arrested after stealing from shops in Marina Bay, Sentosa, and VivoCity

Four men, aged between 40 and 50, were arrested over their suspected involvement in a series of thefts at popular tourist destinations across Singapore.

The thefts occurred over the first two weeks of April, in the vicinity of VivoCity, Marina Bay Sands, and Palawan Beach in Sentosa.

Unattended bags and personal belongings targeted

In a statement released by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) on Wednesday (15 April), the authority stated that the thefts occurred between 1 and 14 April.

The Chinese nationals allegedly targeted unattended bags and personal belongings of individuals who were distracted.

Those who were not vigilant with their possessions in crowded venues were also targeted, SPF said.

Cross-division investigation

Following ground enquiries and CCTV footage, officers from the Clementi Police Division, Central Police Division, and Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identities of the four men.

They were subsequently arrested on 14 April.

The four men will be charged in court on 16 April with the offence of theft with common intention.

If found guilty, they may be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.

Firm stance against theft

In its statement, SPF emphasised its firm stance against offenders who commit theft.

They also warned that offenders will be dealt sternly in accordance with the law.

The public is advised to be aware of their surroundings and not leave their belongings unattended.

They should also keep items within arm’s reach and prevent opportunistic criminals from quickly snatching bags and fleeing, SPF said.
