Unmarried couple arrested in Malaysia by religious police over ‘indecent relationship’
A 28-year-old man and a 50-year-old married woman were arrested in Johor after religious enforcement officers raided a shophouse unit where they were allegedly cohabiting.
The pair, who are colleagues, were said to have developed a romantic relationship before moving in together, according to China Press.
Raid conducted at shophouse in early hours
According to a spokesperson from the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ), the operation took place at about 3.15am on Wednesday (29 Apr) at a ground-floor shophouse in Pontian District.

Enforcement officers surrounded both the front and rear entrances before knocking on the door.
“After we knocked for five minutes, a man dressed in trousers and a T-shirt finally opened the door. Upon entering, enforcement officers found a woman sitting on a mattress,” the spokeperson said.
Pair found to be not legally married
Preliminary checks revealed that the two were not married to each other.
The man is reportedly single, while the woman is married.

Relationship allegedly began at workplace
Authorities said the unit was rented by the woman, according to Harian Metro.
The pair are believed to have grown close while working at the same company, eventually developing romantic feelings.
Their relationship allegedly progressed to cohabitation, leading to the raid.
The couple has been detained for further investigations under Section 27 of the Johor Shariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1997.
