Woman in Thailand books resort online but finds it abandoned upon arrival

Hoping to let her young child experience the beach, a woman booked a resort in Thailand online.

But when she arrived with her family, she discovered that the resort had been completely abandoned, leaving them without a place to stay for the night.

She later shared her experience on TikTok as a cautionary tale, with the video garnering over 2.4 million views.

Resort still appears on Google Maps as if operational

In her video, the woman said she made the booking through an app and checked the location on Google Maps before the trip.

The resort, Mai Rut Beach Eco Resort & Camping, is located in the Khlong Yai district of Trat province.

After seeing photos and positive reviews online, she believed the place was legitimate and went ahead with the booking.

At the time of writing, the resort still appears on Google Maps like an operational listing, while its website remains accessible and booking platforms such as Booking.com and Agoda still appear to allow reservations.

Its social media pages, though, no longer appear to be available.

The listing also appears to have mostly positive Google reviews, including five-star ratings from as recently as six and nine months ago.

Most of the other reviews were posted about a year ago, with many featuring glowing comments, photos, and replies from the resort.

However, the listing’s most recent review, posted four days ago, is also its only one-star review and claims that the place had already been “abandoned”.

Neighbour claims resort owner had left Thailand

The TikToker said she had trouble finding the entrance when she arrived at the resort.

She eventually entered through a neighbouring property, prompting its owner to come out and speak to her.

According to the woman, the owner told her that the place she had booked was abandoned.

Footage from her video showed the property overgrown with vegetation and in a rundown state due to a lack of maintenance.

The neighbour claimed that the resort had previously been owned by a foreigner who had left the country, and added that her family was allegedly not the first to have been led there by the listing.

On the resort’s website, its owners describe themselves as a Brazilian couple and chefs who had previously lived in the United States and Portugal before moving to Thailand.

They wrote that they discovered Mai Rut Beach while on sabbatical in Asia and eventually turned their dream into a seaside bungalow resort with five private beaches.

Family planned to stay nearby but left after feeling uneasy

The owner of the neighbouring property later offered the family a room at his place for 500 baht (about S$20), per night.

They initially accepted the offer. While the woman and her child spent some time at the beach, her husband went to check out the room.

However, the quiet surroundings soon began to feel unsettling. The woman noted that the beach was completely empty, and they appeared to be the only people there.

Her unease grew when her husband returned and told her that the entrance to the room was decorated with many sacred talismans and charms.

The owner’s repeated questions about whether the family was truly comfortable staying there only made her feel more anxious.

Noting that the situation felt like the beginning of a horror movie, the family decided it would be best to leave before it got too dark.

They ultimately cut their losses and drove home.
