Japanese TikToker apologises after fake video gets man in Thailand fired
On 13 July, a Japanese TikToker with over 500,000 followers posted an apology and addressed the situation surrounding a fake video he posted that got a man in Thailand fired from his job.
In the beginning of the video, the TikToker explains that the social experiment aims to find out whether or not walking with your wallet exposed will lead to it getting stolen.
The video, which remains posted on Facebook on a page with the same name, depicts the Japanese man about to play a game on Khao San Road when he appears to be pickpocketed by a local manning a game.

TikToker asked local man to take his wallet
The video went viral and led to the local man being eyed with suspicion by tourists in the area, affecting his business, Khaosod English reported.
However, the TikToker later admitted that he had asked the man to pretend to remove the wallet from his pocket in exchange for in-game items or money.

Things escalated further when a woman, who claimed to be the local man’s sister, made posts online to further elaborate on the situation.
She said her brother had no idea that the video he assisted the TikToker in making would end up painting him as a thief.
The woman also claimed that her brother was at risk of losing his job due to the video.
Legal complaint filed and apology issued
Photos circulating online show the victim lodging a police report.
It is alleged that he filed complaints that the video had affected his reputation.

Following this, the Japanese TikToker apologised publicly for the fake video.
In his apology video posted on TikTok, he showed that he exchanged multiple messages with the man’s sister, in which she explained the situation and demanded he take responsibility for his actions.

The TikToker shared that he since had recorded a video addressed to the man’s family and asked them to use it to explain the situation to the man’s employer.
He claimed that the woman later sent him an update saying that her brother had been allowed to return to work.
