At least 8 dead as record rainfall triggers flooding in Japan
Record-breaking rainfall lashed Chiba Prefecture in Japan between 13 and 14 Aug, triggering severe flooding that has left at least eight people dead.
The floods also disrupted roads and public transport, leaving thousands of people stranded and unable to return home.

According to The Japan Times, authorities have urged residents to remain alert for possible landslides.
Multiple people found dead after vehicles submerged
Over a 12-hour period, 348mm of rain fell in Chiba’s Chuo Ward, around three times the area’s average rainfall for the entire month of August.
The downpour flooded streets and forced multiple roads to close, while expressways were also shut as a precaution against possible landslides.
Rail services across the region were similarly disrupted, leaving around 7,000 people stranded at Narita Airport.
At least eight people have died amid the flooding. Several victims were reportedly found on flooded streets or trapped inside vehicles that had become submerged.
Videos circulating on social media also show vehicles completely underwater.

Thousands forced to spend the night away from home
Other posts on social media show packed train stations as commuters were left stranded by suspended rail services.
Photos and videos show people sitting on station floors and along the walls.

One person lamented that they might have to spend the night at the station because of the disruption.
According to The Asahi Shimbun, authorities converted several public spaces into temporary shelters for those unable to return home.
Around 1,700 people stayed overnight and were provided with bottled water and blankets.

The severe weather has also caused widespread power outages.
According to NHK, around 23,000 households across multiple prefectures were without electricity.
