Her father, Skip Panettiere, said in a statement: “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

He also asked for privacy as the family takes time to process the loss.

Child star rose to fame through ‘Heroes’ and ‘Nashville’

Panettiere began acting as a child, appearing in the soap opera ‘One Life to Live’ from the age of five before going on to star in ‘Guiding Light’.

At nine, she voiced Princess Dot in Pixar’s 1998 animated film ‘A Bug’s Life’.

She later gained wider recognition for playing Sheryl Yoast in the 2000 sports drama ‘Remember the Titans’, alongside Denzel Washington.

Her career reached new heights in 2006 when she starred as cheerleader Claire Bennet in the NBC science-fiction series ‘Heroes’.

Her performance earned her two Golden Globe nominations, while Panettiere also performed her character’s songs herself.

On the big screen, Panettiere appeared in films including ‘Remember the Titans’, ‘Raising Helen’, ‘Ice Princess’, and ‘I Love You, Beth Cooper’.

In 2011, she played Kirby Reed in ‘Scream 4’, later reprising the fan-favourite role in ‘Scream VI’ in 2023.

She also lent her voice and likeness to the 2015 survival-horror video game ‘Until Dawn’.

Panettiere spoke openly about personal struggles

Throughout her career, Panettiere was candid about the challenges she faced while growing up in the spotlight.

In May this year, she released her memoir ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning’, in which she reflected on child stardom, postpartum depression, addiction and recovery, trauma, domestic abuse, and loss.

Panettiere had previously spoken publicly about her struggles with alcohol and opioids, as well as postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter in 2014.

“I could relate to a lot of those storylines like the alcoholism and postpartum depression. They hit close to home,” she told People in 2022, referring to storylines involving her ‘Nashville’ character.

She underwent inpatient treatment and trauma therapy as part of her recovery, and previously revealed that her drinking had at one point become severe enough to seriously affect her health.

Brother’s death had profound impact on Panettiere

Panettiere was also deeply affected by the sudden death of her younger brother, Jansen, who died in February 2023 at the age of 28.

His family later said he died from aortic valve complications and an undiagnosed enlarged heart.

Panettiere later said the loss took a heavy emotional and physical toll on her.

“When I lost him, I felt like I lost half of my soul,” she told People in 2024.

She also said stress and increased cortisol contributed to rapid changes in her body, which affected her confidence and made it difficult for her to leave the house.

Reflecting on her grief two years after Jansen’s death, she added: “I will always be heartbroken about it. I will never be able to get over it. No matter how many years go by, I will never get over his loss.”

Panettiere is survived by her 11-year-old daughter Kaya, whom she shares with former fiancé and retired boxer Wladimir Klitschko.

Her death came five days before what would have been her 37th birthday on Friday (21 Aug).
